Welcome back! 👋
Let’s learn yet another interesting concept. Matter.
This post is going to be short, simple, and super clear — explaining one of the most basic ideas in science.
This is part of the series: “One Concept Daily” 📚
Feel free to share your feedback or doubts in the comments or through my email.
Alright… let’s dive in. 🚀
What is Matter?
Look around you right now. 👀
What do you see?
A mobile phone 📱
A wall 🧱
A pen ✏️
A cup of tea ☕
People 👤
Vehicles 🚗
Trees 🌳
Water 💧
Even air 🌬️
Everything you see has a different name.
But scientists needed one single word to represent all these things.
That’s how the word “matter” came into the picture.
👉 Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space in the universe.
(We’ll explore “mass” in the next post — and trust me, it’s more than just weight 😉. For now, your current understanding is enough.)
Quick Challenge 💡
Name 10 things around you right now in the comments.
Let’s see how everything you list actually falls under matter. 👇
States of Matter (Nature of Matter)
We know everything around us is matter.
But how do we classify them?
We divide matter into different states:
1. Solid 🧊
Anything with a fixed shape and structure.
Examples:
Pen, pencil, mobile phone, table…
👉 If it has a definite shape — it’s a solid.
2. Liquid 💧
No fixed shape — it takes the shape of its container.
Examples:
Water, juice, tea, coffee…
👉 Liquids flow, but they still have mass and occupy space.
3. Gas 🌬️
This is where most people get confused.
“Does air really have mass?”
Yes — it does. 💯
Air might feel light, but it’s not empty.
👉 Empty space is called a vacuum
👉 Air is not empty — it’s made of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide
So yes… gases are also matter.
4. Plasma ⚡
This is the fourth state of matter.
It’s similar to gas but more energetic and slightly advanced.
For now, just remember:
👉 There’s more than just solid, liquid, and gas 😉
A Simple Example 🔄
Let’s take ice.
🧊 Ice → Solid
💧 Water → Liquid
🌬️ Water vapor → Gas
Same substance… different states.
This change is called change of state.
(We’ll explore this deeper in another post.)
Final Thought 💭
Matter is not complicated.
It’s simply:
👉 Anything that takes up space
👉 Anything that has mass
That’s it.
Simple… but powerful. ⚡
See you in the next post — where we break down mass in a way you’ve never understood before. 😉
